“Indeed, I like volleyball. But of course not as much as Shoyo and Tobio. If only I hadn't gotten injured, I would have continued playing volleyball in high school. Even so, it's been a pleasure and an honor to be your manager. I can watch you guys grow over time and become part of our team's rise.” ****—Ayaka Hoshimura to Tsukishima.
Ayaka Hoshimura (Japanese: 星村 絢火, Hoshimura Ayaka) was a first-year student at Karasuno High. She joined the boys’ volleyball club partway through the year as the third manager.
As of 2018, she is a college student and will begin working at an architecture firm in Tokyo once she graduates.
Hoshimura is a beautiful teenage girl who stands at a tall height and has an ideal body. She has wavy, navy hair that falls at her lower back with blunt bangs that are parted on the right and two collarbone length fringes to frame both sides of her face. She is usually seen wearing her hair down, but sometimes she ties or braids it. She has golden-brown eyes with long lashes, thick eyebrows, and beauty marks above the right corner of her lips and near the tail of her right eye. Apart from her face, she also has beauty marks and moles spread across several parts of her body.
In her first appearance, she wears Karasuno High girls' uniform, with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. After that, she was often seen wearing the volleyball manager's uniform.
In the post-timeskip, Hoshimura has hair that reaches her upper back with bangs swept to the left side.
Although she can be a little nervous in a new environment, Hoshimura actually likes being around others. She enjoys lending a helping hand to others and has no problem asking for help when she needs it.
Hoshimura is very kind, empathetic and compassionate. She is also a good listener. She has a great deal of affection for her loved ones and can also be very self-sacrificing. She prefers to avoid conflict, so she will seek to settle any dispute as soon as it arises. Despite her kindness, she has a limited tolerance and detests rudeness and arrogance. She can be sarcastic and blunt at times, especially when someone makes fun of her. She is also protective of her friends and family; for example, when there were male students teasing Yachi, she would immediately reprimand them and pull her away from them.
Hoshimura is a good observer. She loves to learn about people and see their way of thinking. She loves to understand other people's emotions and feelings. She is able to notice things that others cannot. For her, observing makes her aware of everything that happens around her, able to see things differently and see others the same way.
Hoshimura is quite tenacious and will not give up lightly when she sets goals to achieve. On top of that, she's a quick learner and gifted academically. She respects others who she believes to be wiser and more intelligent than herself and will not hesitate to learn from people who are better than her in any aspect. One example is that she admires Kageyama's intelligence and talent as a setter in volleyball (although she also pities that maybe it is the only intelligence he has).
Hoshimura was born and lived in Miyagi Prefecture until she was in 3rd grade of elementary school. Then she moved to Tokyo due to his parents' business. She previously played volleyball from elementary to middle school. Her intelligence around the game of volleyball is pretty high, that's why she played as the setter for her middle school team. In the final match of the Tokyo Prefectural Junior High School Volleyball Tournament, she injured her right shoulder. Seeing her condition, her mother asked her to stop playing volleyball, at least until her shoulder was completely healed from the injury. She reluctantly agreed to her mother's request. She decided not to play volleyball in the club during her high school years.
Hoshimura returned to Miyagi after she graduated from junior high school. In Karasuno High, she signed up to be a manager because she wanted to observe Kageyama's game, and also see how Karasuno's team rose again and developed their potential. Although she was nervous at first, he has now gotten used to it and is quite familiar with the team.
After graduating, she went to college majoring in architecture. She was interested in architecture because she was influenced by her father who worked as an architect.
She knew the rumor about "King of The Court" and the news of Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High's defeat against Shiratorizawa Academy Junior High from local sports magazine. Originally, she did not attend Karasuno High. But after knowing from Fujibayashi that Karasuno boys' volleyball team had just had practice match with Karasuno High's volleyball team and “King of the Court” & “Karasuno’s #10” was on the team, she decided to transfer to Karasuno, because she was curious about them and hoping to meet them in person.
Yachi was the first student she met on her first day at Karasuno High School, she sat on the seat to Yachi's right. Hoshimura first met Hinata and Kageyama when they were both in class 1-5 to ask Yachi teaching them English. She went to the toilet, when she returned to class there were both of them. Before that, on the way to class, she happened to see the manager recruitment poster made by Kiyoko that was displayed on the school hallway bulletin board, and then she became interested in applying herself as a manager, because she just recently moved to Karasuno three days ago and hasn't joined any clubs yet.
After they left, Hoshimura asked Yachi if she is close to them. She answered that she had just seen them at the school gymnasium yesterday, and she had only just gotten to know them today. She had not been officially recruited as the manager of the boys' volleyball club by the current manager, Kiyoko. Hearing that, Hoshimura wanted to become a manager even more. But at the same time she was also hesitant, because she wasn't sure her parents would give her permission.
Hoshimura told Yachi that she also wanted to be a manager, and Yachi was very happy to hear that. She asked Yachi to accompany her to meet Kiyoko. She told Kiyoko that she also wanted to apply as a manager, but it's still uncertain because she wanted to ask her parents' permission first. Kiyoko was also happy and relieved, because Yachi would not be the only manager when she graduated. Kiyoko and Yachi accompanied her to training and is welcomed by the Karasuno High boys volleyball team.
After she had the courage, Hoshimura asked her parents for permission to become a manager of boys volleyball club at her school. Her parents initially disagreed because they were concerned that her shoulder injury, from which she was still recovering, might get worse and prevent her from doing her duties properly. But eventually they agreed, on the condition that if she pushed herself too hard and made her injury worse then she would have to quit being manager.
Yachi told Hoshimura that she is making a promotional poster for donations for the Karasuno volleyball club. She originally wanted to keep this a secret from most of the team members, but considering that they are both new managers of the team and want to do something for their team, Yachi thinks it should be okay. Hoshimura asked for several copies of the poster, so she could help distribute them. At home, her mother saw the poster lying on Hoshimura's study table. Her mother decided to donate, but without Hoshimura's knowledge. She then called the phone number on the poster, which was Takeda-sensei's number, to ask how to donate to the Karasuno boys’ volleyball team.
